4Quarters: 08/20/2011

First Quarter - NFL Preseason
Sure the NFL preseason is different than most with most of the summer workouts being wiped out by the labor dispute. The games are a way to get reps and such but I don't care for them so I'll let them exist but the NFL starts when the games really count. No matter if Todd Haley whines about the Ravens are running up the score on him.

Second Quarter - Fox Sports
The best thing the network did in years was hire Gus Johnson and put college football guys on the college games they'll be doing on Fox/FX. However the fact that their number one play-by-play man Joe Buck continues to work with a voice ailment just makes the network literally sound awful.

Third Quarter - ESPN Baseball Sections
Tomorrow night ESPN Sunday Night Baseball will have Cardinals-Cubs for the second time what I believe to be four weeks. I understand the need for ratings by having teams that draw well but I'd suggest having teams that are hardly on would have the same effect. How about showing the struggling teams earlier in the year on Monday/Wednesday/Sunday night baseball instead of the same seven teams throughout the season. I'm not just saying this as a Royals fan but the fact MLB Network does and they produce the better product.

Fourth Quarter - Omaha Stormchasers
I admit that the new name/stadium has gotten me repumped about the Kansas City Royals triple A affiliate Omaha Stormchasers. I've been out to beautiful Warner Park seven times for games (in addition to stopping by for merchandise at the Storm Front a couple times) and saw them in Salt Lake City last weekend. Having future stars of the organization and journeymen on the team has led to a fun summer of following. The team should make the playoffs which I'll try to get out and follow.

The Return of 4Quarters

As a new season of college football and the NFL are close to begginning and being out of work I felt its important to resume the blog. Also I've rebranded this blog from thedrUNKenLoper to 4Quarters with Mike Vamosi. As some of you may or may not remember I hosted a radio show in college with this name and wrote a column in the Antelope with this name. I felt it was a novel idea to bring it back once again where I pick four sports topics and give my opinions on it. Hope you enjoy it, in addition that it takes me places.

First Quarter: Royal Expectations
- I feel that losing 100 games is an embarrassment even if your not going to contend you might as well be the grand loser (you can have it this year Houston). Playing well the last two month with the young talent should KC make the supposive jump most Royals fans have been waiting for in 2012 or realistically 2013. During the teams last road trip through Boston and Cleveland the Royals went 4-3 which is encouraging no doubt given how bad they've been away from the K. 70 or more wins is what I hope this team can get and build momentum for next season.

Second Quarter: 2012 All-Star Game Logo
- July 10, 2012 Kauffman Stadium will host their first All Stat Game in 39 years (Royals Stadium at the time in 1973, NL won 7-1). I like that the logo reflected KC's logo with a crown but would have liked to have the script be the cursive that the Royals use for everything and not the script that MLB decided on. Again not a horrible logo but throw in some fountains but at least use a script Royals fans are familar with.

Third Quarter: NBA Lockout
- To those who like the National Basketball Association it maybe awhile for the league to resume play. This shouldn't be a surprise because the players and owners are much further apart than they were in the NFL. The league really needs to figure about competive balance like the other leagues have seen not one benefical to just the Boston, LA Lakers of the league sure the bigger markets such as Chicago, New York, Dallas etc but the mid to small markets need to have hope also.

Fourth Quarter: Philadelphia Heat-gles?
- At the start of the week a certain four letter network asked the question of are the Philadelphia Eagles the Miami Heat of the NFL? Nothing more than a slow news week says I because a football roster isn't like a basketball roster and an addition of two or three players puts you in position for the title. Also the competition is different and it seems that the other teams in the league don't like the press Philadelphia is already getting before the start of the season.

Well the rebranding is done and hopefully I'll produce a couple entries per week.

Thanks and as always

Unlucky #7 for the Chiefs Kingdom

Let me start off by saying I'm a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan so the thoughts expressed in this blog are probably shared by other KC fans. The date is Jan. 16, 1994 against the Houston Oilers at the AstroDome. Joe Montana led the Chiefs to a 28-20 victory over the Oilers little would anyone know that was the last time Kansas City would win in the NFL playoffs.

Jan. 23, 1994 AFC Title Game L at Buffalo Bills 30-13, head coach Marty Schottenheimer
Dec. 31, 1994 AFC Wildcard L at Miami Dolphins 27-17, head coach Marty Schottenheimer
Jan. 7, 1996 AFC Divisional L vs Indianapolis Colts 10-7, head coach Marty Schottenheimer
Jan. 4, 1998 AFC Divisional L vs Denver Broncos 14-10, head coach Marty Schottenheimer
Jan. 11, 2004 AFC Divisional L vs Indianapolis Colts 38-31, head coach Dick Vermeil
Jan. 6, 2007 AFC Wildcard L at Indianapolis Colts 23-8, head coach Herm Edwards
Jan. 9, 2007 AFC Wildcard L vs Baltimore Ravens 30-7, head coach Todd Haley

Frustrating enough is the fact is KC is 31-1 at home during the regular season combining the '95, '97, '03 and 2010 seasons at Arrowhead. But after today the home playoff game record is 0-4. Better days are likely ahead but after today its simply just more heart break for the fans of the red and gold. Yes, seven straight playoff losses is a unwelcomed NFL record that is all the Chiefs.

One Game Doesn't Define a Season

Yesterday the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Oakland Raiders to end the regular season in large part to a lousy fourth quarter. Following this it seemed everyone on the internet and TV said KC was done. Yes the Chiefs lost and are 7-1 at home at the new Arrowhead, but its just one week even if the third seed was on the line. Before you crown the Ravens as the winner just remember those picking against KC probably just remember week one when they were on MNF the only time the country saw them which isn't many probably because it was the second game that Monday.

Return to the Playoffs

Sunday, January 9 the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs at the new Arrowhead Stadium. It will be the first time since the 2007 the team has been in the playoffs when they lost to the Colts. Against the Colts in 2004 was the last time KC hosted a playoff game. The Chiefs will be trying to win a playoff game for the first time since the 1994 season when they defeated the Houston Oilers at the Astrodome behind Joe Montana. That same season was the last time KC won a home playoff game vs the Pittsburgh Steelers. More through out the week on this but just to wet the whistle.
